6:00am is Early!

Workout: 4 Mile Easy Run

Oh My God! I hate getting up in the morning. I am really having doubts about being able to train for a fall marathon through the summer. I recognize the importance of running in the morning but really, I was so close to not getting out of bed at 6:00am this morning. And what happens when I have to crawl out at 5:00am as my runs get longer?

But… I did drag out and managed to find the front door. I will have to say, I don’t know why but this run was hard. I’m not sure if it was because it was in the morning, or because I just ran last night but I was feeling it. In fact my first mile was at a 9:30, so I really had to bust ass on the last three to make up for that.

Anyway I’m still a little sore which is also odd. Maybe I pushed too hard on the last three? So I suppose to take tomorrow off or cross but I’d really like to do one of my weekend runs tomorrow (either 4 or 9) as I will be traveling a bit for the holiday. We’ll see how it goes.

New Variation of the Algonquin Route

Workout: 6 Mile Easy Run

Another variation of my Algonquin Lake route.  I will have to say I was pretty tired tonight.  I was a half mile in thinking… holy crap I’m only 1/12th done!  That is never a good sign.

I decided to run on the South side of Algonquin tonight.  It was a little hilly which makes for a harder workout so that is good.  Also I don’t know if I didn’t eat enough but my legs were definitely a little heavy.  The big payoff of this route is the last half mile is a nice downhill where I can kick it in.  But tonight I was really having to work hard.

I do feel like I’m continuing to get back into running trim but would like to drop a few more pounds.  But that will come with time.  And I really don’t want to peak until October anyway.

Good run, so far on track for the week!

Week 2 Speedwork

Workout: Tempo Run
(1 mile warm-up, 20 minute tempo, 1 mile cool down)

More speedwork tonight. I ran with the Gazelle group again and hooked up with the J’s (Julie, Jason & Jeff) although to be honest I don’t know which one is Jeff and which one is Jason. Need to work that one out.

Anyway it was a little on the warm side so my legs were not as fresh as I would have liked. About lap #7 I was really rolling my eyes and not talking too much. But my ego kicked in and was not about to be left in the dust by The J’s. Once I got within a lap and a half of the end I knew I’d have enough gas.

The fun part was after the run I sat around and stretched a lot longer than I normally do. It was nice because there were a bunch of other runners just milling about. The sun was out, it didn’t seem so hot (since I was not running) and it just felt good to be outside.

I finally feel like I’m getting back into running form. I feel more focused and dedicated. I feel stronger and faster. I’m not in prime shape but am on my way.

Here were my splits….

Warm-up: 8:49 (1 mile)

400meter laps
Lap 1 1:51
Lap 2 1:56
Lap 3 1:55
Lap 4 1:57

Run Around Algonquin Lake

Workout: 8 mile easy run

Wow what a great run today. It was nice to get some distance back in my legs. I decided to run a somewhat new route. I ran all the way around Algonquin lake which I guessed would be a little more than 8 miles.

I really tried to take it easy. I would like to do a better job slowing down my long runs as I prepare for Chicago. Anyway was fun running along the lake. There were a lot of people out and about and even stumbled across some fellow runners.

The other great thing about this route is there are some decent sized hills. Nothing that will kill you, but enough to let you know you’re working.

I felt pretty strong the whole way through, but did get a little tired about a mile and a half out. My legs started to feel a little heavy, but by then I knew I was close to home.

Anyway good run, and happy to be out and about, and best of all no knee twinge!

Reeds Lake 10K!

Workout: Race 10K

Another fun race. I love this 10K because it runs through the East Grand Rapids neighborhood around Reeds Lake. There were about 1000 people running the 10K and good amount of crowd support. Plus it’s about 30 minutes from my house which is always a big plus.

Allison was nice enough to let me run it with her, which was great because I wanted to take it easy and she helped keep my pace in check. The weather was better than last year. Still sunny but not nearly as hot. In fact you could not have asked for a nicer day.

Afterwards we hung out at the post race party which was great. I had two ice cream sandwiches! That was worth the 6 miles right there!

I don’t know that there is a lot to report. I did notice a slight left knee twinge around mile 3 & 4 but nothing to get worked up about. I’ll just keep an eye on it in the future.

Great day, great race.

That Was Muggy!

Workout: 5 Mile Easy Run

Holy crap it was freaking muggy and hot. And something seemed off with Garmin because it was telling me I was running 9:30’s throughout the first mile when actually I was running 8:20’s. I couldn’t figure out why my legs seemed so dead and I was breathing so hard. I mean I knew the conditions were not good, but I couldn’t believe that it was slowing me down that much. So when I finished my first mile and Garmin chirped at me that I had just clipped off an 8:20 I thought…. That makes a little more sense and slowed down.

So tonight I decided to run my 4 mile route and just add and extra mile somewhere along the way. But as soon as I made it out to the boon-docks the flies were all over me and I ran through some valleys with no wind. I was channeling my run on the Paul Henry Trail last summer. It sucked! Just for a half mile or so but still… Note to self… the 4 miles route is called the 4 mile route for a reason. Do not add mileage through a fly infested, airless swamp valley.

But considering the weather was questionable I felt pretty good. It’s nice to be back on a program again. Good to be a little more consistent.

First Tempo Run W/ Gazelle

Workout: Tempo Run
(1 mile warm-up, 20 minute tempo, 1 mile cool down)

To night was my first “Speed” workout with the Gazelle Group. They meet at Western’s Track every Tuesday. I am really looking forward to these workouts because I hate speedwork, as I have stated here 1000 times, but I think having the group support will be good.

When I arrived there were about 30 people there which was great. And evidently the Half Marathoners program does not include speedwork yet, so the group will get larger later in the season. Anyway we were all grouped by our “VDOT”. Not entirely sure what this is, other than it has to do with training pace. So being grouped by our VDOT means everyone in any particular group will run about the same pace. This is good!

So we started out with a warm-up run through Western’s Campus. This was great. It was an easy pace so there was a lot of chatting and getting to know each other. Also there were a lot of students out and about even though it’s summer break so that was fun.

After we got back to the track we grouped by VDOT’s and then started our track workout. The idea behind a Tempo Run is to run at just below your Lactic Threshold. Based on my 10K time mine is a 7:57/m pace or 1:57/lap. I ran with the J’s… Jim Jeff & Julie. They were great. All training for Chicago as well so that’s all good.

Here were my splits….

Warm-up: 8:59 (1 mile)

400meter laps
Lap 1 1:56
Lap 2 1:56
Lap 3 1:59
Lap 4 2:00
Lap 5 2:00
Lap 6 2:00
Lap 7 1:57
Lap 8 1:56
Lap 9 1:55
Lap 10 1:56

Team Playmakers West

Workout: 6 Miles

Most Saturday mornings I will be running with the Gazelle folks but this week they are all running the Kalamazoo Classic on Saturday, and for whatever reason I didn’t feel inspired to run that race.  So… Plan B became Team Playmakers West.  This is a sub group that runs in Portland, MI on Saturday mornings.

I was a little out of sorts this morning, probably because I was out late last night drinking Long Island Ice Teas.  Although I seemed to wake up with no problem my decision making seemed a little flighty.  All in all I did well getting out the door but forgot both my Garmin and a watch.  That’s why the time at the bottom is an estimate.

The good news is I found the group pretty easily and there were a couple of people (Brenda & Steve) who said they ran 8:30’s and were doing 6 miles.  Plus Jane, who is sort of in charge of this group, had a map for everyone that spelled out the mileage.  So I know I ran 6, but the times is sort of guess.

I know I’ve said this before but I really did feel soft on today’s run.  Now it was a little warm but I really need to get back in the gym and work on my strength.  I was thinking today that I don’t think I could run another Marathon right now at any pace, which is bad.

The other thought is that I need to start getting up and running in the morning.  I like to run at night, but I think it’s going to be too hot.  We’ll see how it goes.

But I am pleased to be back on track and now just need to focus on getting stronger.

4 Miles

Workout: 4 Miles Easy Run

What can I say… 4 miles. I felt a little faster tonight but still out of peek shape. Definitely a little soft around the middle. Need to refocus on building up my core and dropping a few pounds.

Glad to be back in the swing of things though. Nice to in a program again.

Great run, but out of shape.

Workout: 5 Miles Easy Run

What a great run…. Now I did not say it was an easy run, but it was a great run. This was my first hard run since SD. On Saturday I really wanted to take it easy and see if anything hurt. Tonight I wanted to log some decent mileage at a good pace. Mission accomplished!

It was hard, I can really tell I’ve taken some time off and been eating like crap for two weeks. But I was able to hold 8:30’s which was good. I was breathing heavy and my core felt really soft and jigglely. But on the upside I have a little bit of a post run high. I feel really great and like I did something with my day, like I’m back on track. I was a little crabby before the run and now am feeling much better.

OK… just a little over 4 more months to go!

And it begins again.... The Chicago Plan

With San Diego behind me I now turn my sites on Chicago. I’ve taken this whole week off and am now ready to ease back into running. So I am officially declaring the breaks over… and non-to-soon!

Here’s the plan….

I’ve joined yet another running team. For those of you playing the home game I am now a member of three different groups. But I don’t anticipate running with the GR folks that much anymore, if at all.

Earlier this week I joined the Gazelle Running Team. I’m not abandoning my Lansing team; certainly I couldn’t do this without them, but will end up splitting time between the two.

Gazelle offers some perks that I can’t get with Playmakers. First, they are much closer (about 35 minutes) so I can make their weeknight runs without having to leave work early. They also do group speedwork on Tuesdays which is great because I don’t particularly enjoy doing speedwork, but recognize that it really helps. So running with other folks should help motivate me. Their culminating race is Chicago which is my next race, so all their programs are set up for Chicago, no adjustment needed. In about 6 weeks they’ll start a strength raining program using plyometrics and other workouts to help increase endurance and speed. Way cool! Lastly, they run on Saturdays so that will not conflict with Playmakers who runs on Sundays. This is awesome because I can choose each week when I want to do my long run, and will always have a group to run with, or I may decide to run with both teams as it looks like I will be training 5 days a week. Plus I really like running with Sheila in Lansing and since she’s also training for Chicago would not want to abandon my running partner.

So there you go, the plan is set. I’m sure it will change as I go along, but it’s good to be working towards a goal again. Woo Hoo!

Nothing Fell Off!

Workout: 6-7 Mile Run

So this was my first run since San Diego, and while I felt pretty good before the run I did notice some right foot pain. I’ve had the pain since SD but it seemed to be getting better. It’s the same pain I had after Detroit last year so I think it’s probably normal.

Anyway I ran with my new group, team Gazelle, and ran fairly slow which was the plan. Hang back and see if anything falls off mid run.

It was a beautiful day and the temperature was perfect. A new group, a new route, it was all good. The only negative is that we headed out about 7:30 and clearly I was not awake yet. Rob, the program director, was very chipper and seemed to be talking a lot. Don’t they know it takes me a while to wake-up?

Anyway, my right foot hurt a little but nothing that I am too worried about. Everything seems to be working which is good as I start training next week for Chicago.

San Diego R-N-R Marathon

Race: San Diego Rock-N-Roll Marathon

Wow… another marathon in the books. It’s hard to believe. The event itself was great. Far bigger than Detroit with a lot more course support. I really wanted to run a sub 4:00, even a 3:40 but I knew very early that my legs were not going to aid me in that endeavor.

I remember someone telling me that the second marathon was so much better than the first. And I would actually agree. I was much smarter about this one and learned a lot. I know have a better understanding of what worked well and where I veered off course. But at the end of the day I had a great race and an even better weekend. I can hardly wait for Chicago in the fall.

So from the beginning… Derek (my buddy from work) and I decided to walk from Flip’s condo to the start about 2 miles away. I was pretty fired up about the race. Nervous, excited, etc… I really enjoyed the walk though because we started out just the two of us on empty downtown streets, but as we proceeded we joined with other runners who were walking from their hotels. They were all excited and nervous as well. We walked up this long hill and by the time we reached the top (the start line) we were among a field of 20,000. Very cool. The first thing we did was head for the porta-jons. We had to wait in line for almost 30 minutes and almost missed the start.

But we did make it to our corrals on time. It was great. They had the big countdown, I found my pace leader (a guy dressed as Elvis with a 3:45 sign in the air). I mean… how could you have a bad day running with Elvis? The race was off, just 26 more miles and I would be done.

On the upside the sky was overcast which was great, on the downside it was muggy as hell and already about 70 degrees. Within the first few miles my legs already felt like lead weights. This was going to be a long day.

I remember talking to one of my friends about the race and made the point without thinking that I was proud that I realized very early that I was not going to have a 3:40 day, unfortunately I didn’t execute plan “B” until about mile 15. Had I just accepted it was not in the cards earlier I think I would have had a much stronger finish.

I just kept thinking I could run out of it. I was ahead of Elvis by about a quarter mile and thought that perhaps I could just hold it for a few more hours I would still get me 3:40.

We spent the first 7 miles bombing around downtown. Past the baseball stadium, and aircraft carrier, some jackass mooning us from his window, a crack-whore bitching out some guy and at a homeless shelter. You know, just the usual stuff. I saw Gabby and Flip at about 5 and gave them high 5’s and the big thumbs up. I was having fun, still in denial.

Then came the hill. The hill I’ve been concerned about for a month. Everyone said… don’t worry about it, it’s nothing. Holly crap, could they be more wrong. This was, and I’m not exaggerating, a 3 mile uphill. The weird thing was I actually felt better going up the hill. I had good pace, and was working hard but also my legs seemed to come around. Maybe this was still doable. I mean Elvis was still behind me!

So we crested the hill about mile 10 and then a long downhill which was nice, but I think is the reason I had IT Band issues later.

So everything was going along fairly well until about 14. I was getting tired and stopped to get some water and when I started running again my right IT Band jumped up and kicked my ass. I mean hard. I mean holly crap… am I going to finish this thing? The good news is as I ran farther it would loosen up. The bad news every time I stopped for water it would tighten back up. So if I needed inspiration not to walk, that was it.

It was also at about mile 15 when Elvis finally passed me. I tried to keep up for about 10 feet but new I was screwed. I finally had to accept that my 3:45 day was not to be. F’ing Elvis! I must admit that was definitely the low point. Watching the 3:45 sign disappear in front of me with still another 10 miles to go. But with every hard mile comes a good mile, so I knew I would have some successes. I found once Elvis passed I slowed to about a 9:00/m pace and thought I’d be able to hold that for the rest of the race.

Well the deeper I got the slower I got. 9:00’s eventually turned to 10’s. But what the hell, I knew I could finish, and that’s something I didn’t have in Detroit. The other thing is in Detroit I emotionally almost lost it at about 22. This time, while I was tired and probably started out too fast, and my knee was killing, emotionally I was fine. Mentally I know I could finish, there was no question.

So in general I loved this race. The bands were awesome, well most of them. There were people almost everywhere on the course. As always I am in love with the High School cheerleaders. Not in a perverted Dateline NBC kind of way, but in a thank God they are cheering kind of way. There was an entire water stop done in a Jimmy Buffet Theme, and a couple of the stops where the cheerleaders were throwing each other into the air. So cool.

In hindsight I think I peeked in Indianapolis a month ago. I felt so great that day and was so up for the race that I sort of lost enthusiasm after it. And this would make sense because the training program I was on was designed to have me peek at Indy. Also I think taper kicked my ass. My eating was poor and my last week of running was a joke. I think next time I will try a shorter taper and will be extra vigilant during it.

Having said all that I am so glad I ran this. I didn’t get the result I hoped for but how can I complain about a 4:05? How can I complain about completing my second marathon? How can I complain about getting to do something less than 1% of the population can do? What a great day. How lucky am I? What a great sport!

Lessons learned….
1) I wrote the locations of the water stops on a piece of tape on my watch and marked where the Gatoraid was. This was enormously helpful as my plan changed.
2) Gu every 60 minutes was perfect. My stomach did get a little queasy but I kept eating which I think paid dividedness in the closing miles, and I never felt like I hit the wall.
3) The taper is the hardest part of the training. Take it seriously and maybe even shorten it a little.
4) The speedwork and cross training works, keep up with it.
5) Follow the program to the T. Don’t skip runs, don’t get arrogant. Just do the work.
6) Get to the start plenty early. Sitting around before the race is one of the fun parts
7) If you know it’s not your day accept it early and make the necessary pace adjustments.
