10 Miles!

Workout: 10K

So I the workout calls for a 10K today, but as I am so far behind I thought I would at least run the 8 miles I was suppose to run last week, and if I was feeling up for it I would try to knock out 10 miles. The Hal Higdon Intermediate training calls out a 10 miler this week.

Well I have to say I was feeling pretty good. I just turned on the headphones and didn’t even count songs (which I usually do). Instead I just settled in and new I’d be on the treadmill for over an hour and a half.

I was running at 10’s thinking at this point it’s more important to be ready to run the Half than how fast I do it. But the thought kept going through my head that today’s 10 mile run would take me just 5 minutes less than last years half marathon (13 miles). I really need to get back into form… but not today.

The good news is everything felt good until mile nine. At that point me legs said “we’re done!” but I was able to talk them into keeping going.

So I finally feel like I will be ready for Moab. It may not be pretty and it will definitely not be fast but I think I should be able to complete the mileage and not be sucking wind so much that I’m not having fun.

Feelin Good...

Workout: 5 miles

What a great run! It’s the first run where my heart wasn’t pounding through my chest and I wasn’t dieing at the end. I even ran an extra mile. I’m still very concerned that I don’t have enough time to be ready for the half, but at least I know I can make it half way without collapsing!

I’ve been following the Hal Higdon Beginner training program since I’ve waited to the last minute to start training, but I’m thinking maybe I’ll try the long run prescribed in the intermediate program. Based on how that goes I may switch back. My thinking is the intermediate program maxes out with a 12 mile training run while the beginner maxes out at 10 miles. From a confidence factor I think I’d prefer to have 12 under my belt, but I don’t want to get injured.

So who knows… we’ll just see how it goes!

What can I do in 5 weeks?

Workout: 4.5 miles

OK… Back on the wagon. I have been a pitiful little runner these last few months. Now I find myself 5 weeks from a half marathon and woefully out of shape. What the hell have I been thinking. Eating like I was running 50 miles a week and yet barely running 5. Dumbass!

So the question now becomes how trained can I become in 5 weeks. Well we’re about to find out. I’ve decided to use the Hal Higdon Beginner Half Marathon training program. It’s a 12 week program and I am starting at week 8. Dumbass x 2.

Oh well, no reason to cry over spilt milk. What’s done is done. Now we’ll just try to log some last minute miles and pray to the running gods for forgiveness.

Tonight’s run was pretty hard, but I got it in. Only two stops for water. Dumbass x 3!

More to come…
